Our lovely little city has been named ‘The Paris of the Prairies’. Amazon.ca’s annual list of the top 20 most romantic Canadian cities has been released, and Saskatoon is sitting extra cozy near the top. In 5th place, to be exact.
What makes it romantic, you ask? Saskatoon is an intoxicating love affair of art and design, intertwined with alluring bridges and architecture, surrounding an adorable downtown core. Our riverside district offers the perfect setting for romantic strolls along the South Saskatchewan River. How does the frigid weather contribute to our standings? The ‘chilliness’ is a perfect excuse to snuggle up real close with our loved ones.
A closer inspection of Amazon’s criteria describes the categories in which we’ve trumped our fancy Alberta neighbours – Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge. Sales data of romance novels, relationship books, romantic comedies, romantic music, and jewelry has given Saskatoon it’s notable title.
While Victoria leads the way in every category (obviously, it’s Victoria), Saskatoon rounded out the top 5 purchasers of romance books. Yep, you guessed it. “Fifty Shades of Grey” was ranked as the most-bought novel. I can’t decide if this speaks to our reputation as ‘hopeless romantics’, or if our taste in literature is seriously lacking…
While the West Coast Canadians are keeping it steamy, the prairies have always been romantic. The breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, the cold winters compelling us to stay inside, snuggle up with a fire and fuel the romance. Saskatoon also has the youngest population in Canada on a per-capita basis, which also might have contributed to our lustful rating.
This year’s top 20 list was mastered by cities in British Columbia and Ontario, but our amorous city managed to capture an impressively high ranking. Meanwhile, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and other dominating cities were absent from the exclusive list.
Saskatoon’s location along the riverbank provides ample opportunity for breathtaking views of one of the prettiest urban settings you’ll ever see – that is, if you can find a parking spot. A trip to the ‘Paris of the Prairies’ might not be quite as seductive as the real deal, but you’ll be feeling the love in our charming little city.
